Containers
A container is an isolated application running inside a container on top of a host infrastructure. It shares the base host operating system but contains its own libraries and binaries for the application. In mainframe terms, it is like an address space.
A virtual machine is a complete and isolated guest operating system running inside a virtual machine on top of a host operating system. Guest and host operating systems may be different. In mainframe terms this is like an LPAR
